FAQ’s
Do you use offset printing?
No. At this time the cost of offset printing is outside the means of our publishing services. Additionally, with shop and return trends, overall cost, fewer books reaching their second or third printings, and some never reaching paperback status, offset printing has lost some of its romantic reverence. Already, it’s not uncommon for paperback editions to be handled through Print on Demand services. Based on these trends, we believe that as the request for Print on Demand books rises, so too will the printing capabilities rise to supply it. We see this as a more sustainable option and want to support the endeavor.
What does ‘upmarket’ mean?
Upmarket fiction is a combination of both literary fiction and commercial fiction. It takes the classic literary elements and makes them accessible to a broader audience. The writing in upmarket fiction is expected to be of higher quality with greater attention to detail to both prose and plot.
Does Extra Extra offer advances?
Extra Extra does not offer advances at this time, only royalty agreements chosen by the author at the time of contract.
How do royalties work with Extra Extra?
The unfortunate fact of book contracts and royalties is that Big Four Publishers will pay handsome sums to authors whom they anticipate will never “earn out” their advances. In truth only about 25% of authors ever earn out their advances, at which point they will begin to collect royalties. At Extra Extra, authors start earning their quarterly royalties immediately after publication, and at the end of their contract all royalties will revert to them until the title is no longer a part of the Extra Extra Publishing House catalogue.
Will I really own my own work?
It’s up to you! Extra Extra will file your copyright unless otherwise agreed upon in our contract. If at the end of contract we have filed on your behalf, all you have to do is ask us! We’ll send you the necessary paperwork and hand control over to you!
Why do it this way?
Extra Extra recognizes that some authors want more autonomy but may not feel up to the challenge of self or independently publishing when they themselves are fresh off the press. We are happy to publish your debut and beyond if that works for you. We’re also happy to help get you on your way, and then get out of the way!
Do authors at Extra Extra have complete control over their work?
No. The conversation between author and publisher should be open and safe and equal. At the end of the day we want our authors to have more control over their work, but not at the expense of branding and community. The premise of publishing novels with extra extra attention to detail means that both author and publisher are on board with the necessary work it takes to turn a charming story into a beautiful statement.
